Dorothy Johnson

I am a retired art educator who currently enjoys an active art practice that includes painting and creating on a daily basis. Art has always been central in my life. I exhibit and enjoy memberships with the Ossining Arts Council, The Pelham Art Center Artists’ Collective, the Katonah Museum Artists’ Association, and ArtsWestchester. I am interested in the transformative power of nature. I paint landscapes and plants in their environment. The US National Parks, High Meadows, my cousins’ property in the Berkshires, and my daily walks offer me limitless subject matter that record my responses to the magic of the natural world. I am exploring identity, memory, and family bonds in my textile paintings which are composed of fabrics that tell rich personal stories within complex compositions. I am blessed with two grandchildren who have been my inspiration for a series of portraits placing them both in the real world and the imaginary. Going forward, I am exploring ways of adding a dimension of deep meditative imagery into my work to find peace and renewing energy. In a challenging world, art has been my constant source of creative experience, expression, and fulfillment.
